We are pleased to announce our "Romantic Seaside Escape" which runs from January until May 1, 2006.

Linekin Bay B&B Gardens

We have completed our three year landscaping plan with Kathy Court and are very pleased with the beautiful gardens she has created. Before owning the inn Marti did not know a weed from a plant, but she is learning and enjoys working outdoors and spends many hours maintaining the gardens. The bluestone patio is surrounded by the Patio Garden of colorful perennials.

We have purchased new wicker furniture for the patio and also for the Holbrook Suite porch. The Shore Garden features Adirondack chairs surrounded by deep pink roses, day lilies, bayberry and winterberry holly. The antique cart in the front sits amid hosta, astilbe, ferns and other shade loving plants. Near our towering horse chestnut tree hydrangea, rhododendron, viburnum are growing. In the fall as you step out of your car, vibrant black-eyed susan, chrysanthemum, sunflowers and sedum will greet you.

Geocaching

Marti’s sister, Mary Beth, has introduced us to a new activity called geocaching, which is an adventure game for GPS users. A GPS unit is an electronic device that can determine your approximate location on the planet. We now have a GPS unit at our B&B so guests can join in the fun. In geocaching (GEO from geography and CACHING for the process of hiding a cache) the GPS device is used to locate caches which are hidden all over the country.

The locations of these caches are shared on the internet. GPS users can use the location coordinates to find the caches. Mary Beth met with the executive director of the Boothbay Region Land Trust, Julie Lamay, who was very excited about having these caches on land trust properties. Larry will be helping to hide the caches and monitoring the activity. The purpose is that geocaching will encourage more people to hike and explore our scenic nature preserves.

Notes of Interest

Wireless Internet
We are pleased to offer both wireless 802.11b & 802.11g internet access for our guests to use with their laptops. Thanks to our good friend and computer genius, David Gudas, each room in the inn has Adelphia high speed internet access. We are very appreciative of his efforts and know that guests will enjoy this convenience.

Expansion at Linekin Preserve
Recently, a generous summer resident donated 40 acres of land adjacent to Linekin Preserve, the Boothbay Region Land Trust's largest property located across the street from our B&B. Larry, who is steward for Linekin Preserve, and others walked the new area and feel that this will be a great addition to Linekin Preserve. The Land Trust plans to develop trails this spring, so guests will be able to enjoy hiking trails this summer.

Penguin Plunge

For the fourth year in a row, Larry braved the 44-degree water on New Year's Day and ran into the ocean at Ocean Point as part of the "Penguin Plunge" to raise money for the Boothbay Region YMCA. This year Larry, who is a regular on a local cable sports talk show called "Bob's Bullpen" interviewed participants and spectators at the Penguin Plunge, which has become the social event in Boothbay on New Year's Day. He even talked friends, David & Pauline Gudas, into doing the plunge and they are planning on coming back in 2007.

2006 Penguin Plunge - Grimes Cove

Are you interested in an invigorating start to the New Year in 2007? We have rooms available at a special rate for Penguin Plungers. After the Penguin Plunge you can head to the Botanical Gardens for their New Year's Day "Here Comes the Sun" Bonfire Party. Enjoy roasted hotdogs, marshmallows and s'mores as you listen to bagpipe music around a blazing fire.

Recipe
Blueberry French Toast- (serves 6)

This recipe is a hit with guests, especially when I let them know that Maine is the top producer of wild blueberries, which is what I use. The cinnamon swirl bread works well with the blueberry sauce.

Blueberry French Toast

12 slices of: Pepperidge Farm French Toast swirl thick sliced bread or Thomas thick slice bread
4oz. cream cheese
6 eggs
1 tsp. cinnamon
12 oz. milk
4 oz blueberry jam

Spread cream cheese over a piece of bread and on another piece of bread spread blueberry jam. Put them together just like making a sandwich. Place in a greased 9 by 13 baking dish. Do this with the rest of the bread. Beat eggs and milk and pour over the bread (I use a blender). Let set for a couple of minutes and turn over each “sandwich” so that the liquid mixture absorbs evenly. Cover and place in ref. and let set overnight.

Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes, checking to see when top just starts to get crispy.

Blueberry Sauce

1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons corn starch
1 cup water
2 cups, blueberries
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon lemon juice

Combine sugar and corn starch. Add water-bring to a boil stir enough so that mixture does not stick. Add in butter, lemon, & blueberries simmer 8-10 minutes stirring occasionally. Spoon over French Toast.

2005 Winter/Spring Newsletter

Changes at Linekin Bay B&B

We were busy this year implementing a new landscape plan with Cathy Court of Landscape Gardens & Design. We are adding three new gardens, improving our existing gardens, and last spring we had a patio of bluestone built with a pergola for shade above it. A “Patio Garden” of perennials was planted surrounding the patio. Our guests found the patio a perfect place to relax while enjoying the views of Linekin Bay and the gorgeous sunsets. A path of bluestone leads from the patio to the “Shore Garden,” where there will be another area for guests to sit, relax and enjoy the sunshine. The “Shore Garden” will be planted this spring. Vines growing on the pergola columns and patio furniture are in the works for the coming season.

Mid-coast Maine - So Many Things to See & Do

We decided to locate our B&B in East Boothbay because the Boothbay Region is one of the best destination areas in the State of Maine. There are so many activities and events offered here and the beauty of the peninsula is outstanding through all four seasons. Over the years the length of stay of our guests has been increasing to take full advantage of what the area has to offer. These include: Puffin & Whale Watches, sailing on a windjammer, excursion boats for harbor and lighthouse tours, kayak, lobster bakes, museums, art galleries, antique stores, great shopping, seafood restaurants, golf, tennis, music, hiking, historic sites, sport fishing, or your visit can be a peaceful time to relax and refresh your soul.

A great reason to stay at Linekin Bay B&B is that it can be your home away from home as an hour’s drive from our inn can bring you to fun places to visit for the day. A short ride up the coast brings you through the lovely town of Damariscotta and then to the rocky coast of Pemaquid. The lighthouse here is located on land, rather than an island, and you can climb the steps to the top and see for miles. Traveling north on Route 1 brings you to the town of Thomaston, which boasts beautiful ship captain’s homes and the interesting Maine State Prison Store. The next stop on Route 1 is Rockland, the home of the Farnsworth Art Museum. Visit Camden where you can see master schooners in the harbor and enjoy elegant gift shops and restaurants. Drive or hike to the top of Mt. Batty and enjoy magnificent views of Camden Harbor.

Traveling south on Route 1 brings you to the antique stores in Wiscasset, the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, the L.L. Bean Store in Freeport, and Portland Head Light, historic sites and shops in the Old Port area of Portland. Don’t forget to spend a day on Monhegan Island where you can hike trails high above the ocean or stroll through the village and visit the art studios. Marti & Larry will be happy to help you plan a memorable day in Boothbay or a day trip around mid-coast Maine.

Notes of Interest

Penguin Plunge
For the third year in a row, Larry braved the 44-degree water on New Year’s Day and ran into the ocean at Ocean Point as part of the “Penguin Plunge” to raise money for the Boothbay Region YMCA. He even talked Marti’s sister, Mary Beth, who is from Austin, Texas into doing the plunge. Lots of money was raised and plungers as well as spectators had a great time.

Sail on the Tribute
After his ‘Penguin Plunge’ Larry warmed up by thinking of summer days on Linekin Bay. We like to hear about the activities our guests find memorable so that we can recommend them to others. On your next visit don’t miss the opportunity to sail with Captain Roger Marin, and his wife, Laurie, on their 40-foot sloop, the Tribute. They take two to six guests, which provides for a relaxing sail and they will let you take a turn at the helm. Roger and Laurie cruised for two years with their sons and they have entertaining stories to share with you. Everyone who has sailed with them returns to the B&B totally rejuvenated.

The Boothbay Region Offers
Great Opportunities to Explore Nature

One of the great benefits of visiting this area is the opportunity to be outdoors and enjoy the natural beauty of Maine. One of the jewels of our peninsula is the Boothbay Region Land Trust. There are 15 BRLT properties, which offer degrees of hiking from moderately easy to good exercise. Many of our guests have enjoyed hiking Linekin Preserve, which is across the street from our inn. We will be happy to help you chose a land trust property to explore.

Another jewel in Boothbay is the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, which is Maine’s first major botanical garden. Started in 1991 by a small group of people, the gardens are located on 128 acres and are a perfect way to enjoy the quiet beauty of the Maine woods and the rocky shore. There are two miles of walks, trails and drives to the gardens. Enjoy the Fern, Wetlands, Shoreland, and Rhododendron Gardens. The CMBG is growing and in 2006 an Education and Visitor Center and five acres of themed gardens will open. Some of the events planned for 2005 include: June- “Art in the Garden’ Gala, July 15 – “Hidden Treasures” House & Garden Tour, August 13 – “Annual Island Tour,” and December 10 – “Winter Wonderland Holiday House Tour.”

The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor
Returns to its Days of Glory

In 2003 a group of residents became the new owners of the legendary Opera House. It is now operated as a not-for-profit organization and the owners have created a place for performances and activity for the creative life of the Boothbay region. The first performance was by singer Jackson Browne, who raised $30,000 to help with the renovations to restore the building to its former beauty. The Opera House was built in 1894 and was originally the home for the Masons and Knights of Pythias. It has lasted through many different uses and the current owners did not want to see it torn down, which has been the fate of many opera houses in Maine.

Events are being scheduled for 2005 including an Oscars Party on February 27 and a concert by Blues rocker Rory Block on March 12. The Lincoln Arts Festival has scheduled the following concerts: A Tribute to Al Corey, Big Band Concert on July 15, Muriel Havenstein on July 20, and the Glen Miller Band on July 23.

For updated information on events at the Opera House visit
www.opera-house.org and www.lincolnartsfestival.org.

2004 Winter/Spring Blog

Changes & Improvements

Marti delved into decorating last winter. Our improvements at the B&B include luxurious new bedding in the Holbrook Suite; the sunroom has new window treatments, floral rugs, and comfortable chairs and settee; the The Linekin Loft room has custom-made pillows and lampshades, and the loft room has colorful braided rugs. The three guest rooms upstairs now have armoires or wardrobes for hanging clothes. Hilary Bartlett of West Harbor Studio spiced up the walls in the Rhapsody in Blue room with beautiful stenciling. Our kitchen has been transformed with a yellow color wash and stenciling. Our friend and carpenter, Jim Roberge, built a beautiful oak cabinet for the sunroom that houses a guest refrigerator, icemaker, ice buckets and microwave.

The Crooked Chimney room has a bright new look. The chimney still “crooks,” but the room has been painted light green. Lace curtains and a colorful quilt add to the charm of this room. Artist Suzanne Norton has hand painted delicate vines and roses on the walls in the bedroom and bath. Although this is our smallest room, it is becoming a favorite of many guests. Marti keeps telling Larry that she is “finally finished” with her decorating changes, but he has heard that too many times to believe it.

Burnt Island Lighthouse

This past season a new “must see” opened in The Boothbay Region. Elaine Jones, who works for the Maine Department of Marine Resources, has created the Burnt Island Living Lighthouse program.Board the Novelty for a ten-minute scenic cruise to Burnt Island. Visit the restored buildings which serve as a living history museum and listen to the stories of the people who portray a lighthouse family who once called Burnt Island home. Climb the winding stairs into the lantern room of the lighthouse. Enjoy nature trails, fishing, or a picnic by the water. Many of our guests visited Brunt Island last summer and enjoyed the experience very much. As Larry says, “It has everything you could want: a boat ride, lighthouse, a theater type performance, nature trails and it only costs $20.”

Maine Interstate Redesignation

Beginning in January 2004 the highway system in Maine will change to a mileage-based system. The Maine Turnpike from Kittery to Houlton will become I-95. I-295 will begin in Scarborough extend through Portland and Brunswick and end in Gardiner. The exit numbers will be based on mileage. When traveling north to the Boothbay Region, you will now take exit 52 on the Maine Turnpike and travel north on I-295 to Brunswick, exit 28. Thirty-seven other states use a mileage-based system and it should be an improvement once people get used to the new system.

Quiet Season Getaway Package

We are pleased to announce our "Quiet Season Getaway Package." This special, which runs from February until the end of April, includes a two night stay at our B&B, cheese, crackers, and a bottle of sparkling cider to welcome you and a $25 gift certificate to The Carriage House Restaurant. Owner Tom Carroll sweetens this offer with two complimentary glasses of wine.

The best part of this special is the price. A two night stay is $200 (plus 7% room and lodging tax) for your choice of any of our four beautiful guest rooms. Just remember to request the "Quiet Season Getaway Package" when you call to book.

The quiet season is one of beauty and tranquility on the Boothbay peninsula. Take a break from your busy routine and experience Boothbay without the crowds this winter or spring. You will return home rejuvenated. Enjoy a walk around Ocean Point, snowshoe on a land trust property, savor a delicious seafood dinner. Soothe your soul with a therapeutic massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, Reiki, spa treatments, or a yoga class, all are offered year round in Boothbay Harbor. Sleep under our new down comforters, relax in front of a fireplace, and awake to Larry's hearty breakfast.

Publications

We were fortunate again to be included in some notable publications. One was “The Discerning Traveler” a guide to the East’s most memorable, delightful and delicious destinations, which describes our inn in the July/August 2003 edition. We were delighted with the very complimentary write-up they did about us. In the February 2004 issue of “Down East Magazine” our inn was described as a great place to stay in an article entitled, “4 Summer Towns For a Winter’s Day-Four Improbable Little Getaways.”

Festivals in Boothbay

Many people are familiar with the summerWindjammer Days Festival. However, there are festivals year round for local people and visitors to enjoy. The following is a list of festivals and their dates for 2004:

Fishermen’s FestivalApril 30, May 1 & 2
Lobster Boat RacesJune 19
Windjammer Days FestivalJune 22 &23
Shipyard CupSeptember 10, 11, & 12
Fall Foliage FestivalOctober 9 & 10
Harbor Lights FestivalDecember 4

Call (1-800-596-7420) or e-mail (info@linekinbaybb.com) us and we will tell you about these interesting events or visit our"Events Page" for a more detailed events listing. Bring some friends or relatives and book the entire B&B. Come experience the food, music, fireworks, street and boat parades, craft fairs, art shows, trap hauling contests, cod fish relays, and horse drawn wagon rides that are part of these fun-filled festivals.

Our Newest Project

We are presently working with Catherine Court, landscape designer, and are very excited about the landscape plan she has developed. We will be adding to and improving the perennial gardens in the front yard and by the parking lot. The back yard will be transformed with flower gardens, trees, a patio covered by an arbor for shade and a walkway leading to more perennial gardens and chairs in the sun. We plan to build the arbor and patio this spring so that guests can enjoy relaxing outdoors in the shade or sun.

Bernie Gaudry

We were saddened this year when our friend, Bernie Gaudry, died after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Bernie and his wife, Jay, were our very first guests when we opened our B&B on Labor Day of 1998. We were excited to welcome our first guests, but we were also nervous, as we were new to innkeeping. We couldn’t have chosen a nicer couple to walk through our doors. Their kindness, enthusiasm, and friendly manner were a real gift to us as we embarked on our new journey as innkeepers. When they were leaving after that first weekend, Bernie and Jay gave us a beautiful compass and said, “We hope that this compass helps many people find their way to Linekin Bay B&B.” Over the years they have visited us many times, sometimes bringing close friends with them. Bernie was an inspiration to us and to other guests who met him at our inn because of his warm personality and gift for making others feel special. We will forever remember him.

2003 Winter/Spring Newsletter

SNOW AT THE COAST!!!

For the first time since we have lived on the coast, we are getting a real Maine winter complete with record amounts of snow. It is truly beautiful to look out and see the white snow glistening in the sun. We have been strapping on our snowshoes to enjoy great exercise and the beauty of our many land trust properties. Finny and Goldie accompany us and are very happy snow dogs. We have snowshoes available for our guests to use. If you haven’t tried snowshoeing before, Larry will be happy to give instructions. You can try snowshoeing in our backyard before venturing out on one of the many trails on the peninsula. Snowshoeing is easy to learn and lots of fun.

OFF-SEASON IMPROVEMENTS

We are involved in two off-season projects this year. Larry and our friend and wonderful carpenter, Jim Roberge, braved some cold and snowy days while completely rebuilding the main entrance and dining room porches at the front of the house. Pictures of our home show that when the house was built in 1878 the two porches were connected. We decided to join the porches and now guests can walk from one to the other. The front porch gets the morning sun making it a great place to sit in the summer and enjoy that first cup of coffee.

We have decided to install air conditioners in the guest rooms. The afternoon sea breeze usually keeps things cool even on the hottest days. However, this was not always the case last summer when for a short period, we experienced some of the warmest temperatures the Boothbay area has ever seen. Each guest room will have a wall unit air conditioner. We feel it will make our guests more comfortable just knowing that air conditioning is available if they need it on a hot summer night.

NEW FEATURES

Mary Sue Weeks of Decorative Illusions recently completed decorative stenciling in the bath of Rhapsody in Blue. It is beautiful and we are thrilled with the new look that our guests will surely enjoy.

In the three guest rooms upstairs we have replaced the clothes racks with wardrobes or armoires. This will give guests more space to hang clothes and will be much more convenient for everyone.

CIVIC INVOLVEMENT

In the five years that we have lived in Boothbay, we’ve come to appreciate the spirit of the community and why this peninsula is a special place to live. Larry is an active volunteer with our local land trust, helping with the clearing of trails and serving as steward for Linekin Preserve, which is located just across the street from the B&B. He is on the board of our historical society and was treasurer of the “Light It Up” committee, a group that raised money and installed lights at our community athletic field for night games.

On January 1st he took part in the YMCA Penguin Plunge running into the 41 degree water at Grimes Cove (and out just as quickly). Larry proudly turned in over $200 he raised from sponsors.

LOST A GUEST AND GAINED A NEIGHBOR

Recently our most frequent guests, Steve and Daureen Sozanski, let us know that they would be our neighbors as they have purchased a beautiful Victorian home on Ocean Point Road overlooking Mill Pond and Linekin Bay. We’re very happy for them and their daughter, Heather, and welcome them to East Boothbay.

A SAD NOTE

This past November we were saddened when we had to have Cubby, our Sheltie of 10 ½ years, put to sleep. Cubby had an inoperable tumor that was taking a toll on his health. We sought the opinions of three different veterinarians before making the decision. We’ve received many cards and calls from relatives, friends, and guests expressing their condolences, for which we were thankful and which helped us a great deal. Our other two Shelties, Goldie & Finnegan (Finny) miss Cubby, but otherwise are doing fine and are ready to greet guests and welcome you to Linekin Bay B&B.

1999 - 2002 Newsletter Archive

THE BAYVIEW ROOM IS COMPLETED

We completed our new "Bayview" room, which is a sunroom, last June. Our guests have enjoyed sitting in the comfortable chairs while sipping their morning coffee and watching the lobster boats in the bay. We now serve breakfast in both the dining room and in the Bayview room, which has five large sliding glass windows that provide beautiful views of the water and allow fresh ocean breezes to circulate.

Our guests have also enjoyed sitting in front of the Vermont style stove with a glass of wine or one of Larry's homemade desserts while viewing a spectacular sunset over Linekin Bay. Guests can read brochures of area attractions and magazines as they relax in this bright and airy room.

The Linekin Loft Now Has a Water View

We recently completed our latest construction project. Our friend and a wonderful carpenter, Jim Roberge, built an oak stairway from The Linekin Loft to the attic. The attic has been transformed into a loft room with a spectacular water view highlighted by a custom floor to ceiling window. This room is furnished with two comfortable overstuffed chairs and a Vermont style stove for relaxing and enjoying the beautiful water view. At the other end is a love seat that can be converted into a twin-sized bed. This room features white B-board walls and ceiling and wide pine board floor.

In the NEWS

Several publications and guidebooks have had positive information about our B&B. One of our guests, who is a freelance writer for The Boston Globe, wrote an article about visiting the Boothbay area during the quiet season. Her travel section article was very kind to us and generated a number of inquiries and reservations.

Portland magazine did an article about being married along the coast of Maine. Linekin Bay B&B was noted as "having the nicest bridal suite in the Boothbay Region." We were also notified by Yankee Magazine that we have been chosen as one of their preferred inns.

We've also been fortunate to be listed in several guide books: Lonely Planet-New England, Waterside Escapes In The Northeast, Maine-An Explorer's Guide, and The Unofficial Guide to Bed & Breakfasts and Country Inns.

FINNY JOINS THE FAMILY

This past July we added a new member to our family. His name is Finnegan and he is an adorable, friendly Sheltie puppy. We got Finny from our good friends in Belfast, Maine, who are breeders and from whom we got Cubby and Goldie.

Finny has been "The Perfect Puppy." Don't we sound just like proud parents? He has been quite a hit with our guests and has taken on the role of greeter at the B&B. Many mornings there is a knock at the door and someone asking, "Can Finny come out to play before breakfast?" Our only concern is that someday Finny will be in a guest's suitcase as they are leaving because we hear comments that he would be a great pet!!

Our Shelties: Finny, Goldie & Cubby

CELEBRITY SHELTIES MAKE THE NEWS

Finny, Goldie, & Cubby are the talk of the Boothbay Region after getting their picture in The Boothbay Register. The accompanying article tells how The Linekin Bay Bed & Breakfast, owned by Larry Brown and Marti Booth, donated a bench for the Linekin Preserve in East Boothbay across the street from our B&B. The bench overlooks the Damariscotta River and will provide a resting spot for tired hikers or those who wish to sit and admire the view. The article states that Larry, who is a dedicated steward volunteer for the land trust, said the gift of the bench is just a way of paying back the land trust for all the enjoyment people get from the Boothbay Region Land Trust properties. Many of our guests hike Linekin and other land trust preserves.

WINTER ISSUE RECIPE
Chocolate Crunch Brownies

This recipe was added to our homemade afternoon dessert menu this year. It is very easy to make and was quite a hit with our guests.

  • 1 pkg. Brownie mix

  • 7 oz. Marshmallow crème

  • 1 cup Peanut Butter

  • 2 cups (12 oz.) semisweet chocolate chips

  • 3 cups crisp rice cereal

Make brownie mix according to package directions in 9 x 13 baking dish. Spread marshmallow crème over cooled brownies. In saucepan melt chocolate chips and peanut butter. Stir in crisp rice and spread over brownies.

2001 - Spring

Looking Forward to the Upcoming Season

After a long, and for us folks along the coast, a surprisingly snowy winter, it is great to see the days become longer and the sun’s rays warmer. This must mean that soon the flurry of activity at Linekin Bay B&B kicks into gear as we get ready to welcome guests to our inn.

Let’s see what has been going on and what you can look forward to.

DECK BECOMES AN ALL-SEASON ROOM

Our good friend and web page designer, David Gudas, told a story one time about a couple who were sitting on their deck and discussed how it would be great to have a roof over their deck so that they could get more use out of it. Next, they decided to install windows and winterize it so they could use it year round. This all worked out very well until one day when the wife mentioned that she now needed to have another deck built.

Hopefully, Marti and I will not have this same problem as we have discussed at length the advantages of converting our deck to an all season room. It will allow guests to enjoy breakfast, afternoon beverages and desserts, or an evening glasses of wine while enjoying views of Linekin Bay no matter what the weather brings.

We’ve been planning this 16’ X 23’ room with our resident contractor, Jim Roberge, who has come up with many great ideas to maximize light and view. He will be starting this project in April and if the weather cooperates our May guests will be enjoying it.

DOWN EAST MAGAZINE

The April 2001 issue of Down East features an article titled “The Quiet Side of Boothbay.” Author Elizabeth Peavey points out what we all know,

“Largely eclipsed by the reputation of Boothbay Harbor, the little village of East Boothbay is by any measure one of the loveliest coastal communities in Maine. Fairly self-contained, still populated mostly by Mainers, and home to a successful boat building industry, it is also dotted with comfortable inns and B&Bs and great places to eat.”

Many great photos compliment this article, which focuses in on the less explored areas in The Boothbay Region.

BOOTHBAY REGION HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Boothbay Region is rich in history and this is showcased at our historical society located at 72 Oak St. just across from the time & temperature sign at The first Bank of Damariscotta. There are seven rooms displaying everything from a lighthouse light, shipbuilding photos and tools, to photos of many of the grand old hotels and buildings which make our area so interesting to learn about.

Open 10-4 Wed., Fri., & Sat. during the summer and 10-2 on Sat. during the rest of the year, the historical society is free. They do offer a wide assortment of books for sale,

which detail the history of the area. This year they are holding a raffle for a framed, original oil painting by Alden Stickney ofThe Steamer Virginia. Larry was recently asked to become a trustee on the board and graciously accepted.

Now a somewhat historical question about the Boothbay Region, “What famous musical staring Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae was filmed here in the summer of 1955?” Mention the correct answer when you check in this summer and receive an extra homemade dessert.

ARRINGTON’S B & B JOURNAL

The following is a letter Larry wrote to Arrington’s B&B Journal, a national publication, which was included in the Feb. 2001 issue “All Inn A Days Work"

My wife and I purchased a home built in 1878 in the mid-coast town of East Boothbay, Maine with the intention of renovating it and establishing a B&B. The house was in dire need of TLC and the project turned into what can best be described as a snowball going down a mountain. It just kept getting bigger and bigger.

We learned two facts about renovations very early into the project: 1) It always takes longer than what you expect and 2) It always costs more.

As we live in a seasonal area, we planned on opening Memorial Day weekend, but kept pushing back the opening as construction was far from finished. In June a caller inquired if we would be open by Labor Day. “Sure” I said thinking that we would definitely be ready by then. I booked our first reservation.

As the summer wore on and Labor Day approached, my wife was less than happy with me for booking this reservation. Working seven days a week from morning to night and with the help of family and friends, we just made it! It was so tight that Thursday morning we were assembling the bed our guests would sleep in when they arrived Friday night.

Our guests, a wonderful couple from New Hampshire, turned out to be an innkeeper’s dream. I could not have chosen a nicer couple for our first guests. Just before they left, they gave my wife and I a beautiful compass and said, “We hope this compass helps everyone find their way to Linekin Bay Bed & Breakfast.”

In the two years that we have been open, this couple has stayed with us five times. Equally complimentary is their referral of two other couples who have stayed with us.

This past April when we lost our Sheltie of 11 years, they sent us a sympathy card. Having guests like these leaves little doubt in our mind that we have chosen a great profession.

Three Diamond Ratings from AAA

For the second year in a row we have received a Three-Diamond Rating from AAA and are very pleased that we are rated in this category. According to the AAA rating guide Three Diamond Properties “offer a degree of sophistication, additional amenities, services and facilities may be offered, and there is a noticeable upgrade in physical attributes, services, and comfort.”

Tour Books

We are listed in two tour books. “The Unofficial Guide to Bed & Breakfasts in New England” 1st edition and“Lonely Planet-New England” both have descriptions and short write-ups about us. The first tour book gave us a rating and noted, “His fresh-baked cookies are great with tea or cider and their philosophy is no one should leave the table hungry.”

Lonely Planet, a publication popular with our European travelers, mentions: “The village of East Boothbay, 2 miles from Boothbay harbor, is not as touristy or commercialized as Boothbay Harbor. It’s a lot more like the real Maine. The Linekin Bay B&B is owned by an extremely amicable former police officer.” A former guest was responsible for getting us into this book.

MURDER MYSTERY WEEKEND

Along with The Greenleaf Inn and Lion d’Or B&B in Boothbay Harbor we will be putting together a Murder Mystery Weekend on February 2nd and 3rd. On Friday night all guests from the three inns will meet at The Greenleaf Inn for a welcoming party where Christopher’s Boathouse will cater scrumptious hors d’oeuvres and the murder mystery will begin. This will be a BYOB event and Jeff, the owner of the Greenleaf Inn, will supply mixes.

This is a “guest participation program” where everyone will play a character in the murder mystery. You will be given a character and other information before you come here for the weekend. All guests will meet for wine and dinner at Christopher’s Boathouse on Saturday night where we will conclude the mystery. Perhaps you will be the super sleuth who solves the mystery.

Space is limited, so if you’d like to come to the Maine Coast, stay at a romantic Victorian bed & breakfast overlooking Linekin Bay, and solve a murder, please let us know. The weekend Murder Mystery package includes a two night stay at the Linekin Bay B&B with two full breakfasts, the Friday evening get-together at the Greenleaf Inn with catered hors d’oeuvres, and wine and dinner at Christopher’s Boathouse on Saturday night. The cost for the package is $400 per couple.

This brings us to another part of your package. You will receive a coupon for 2 subs, 2 sodas or bottles of water and complimentary pastries from the historic East Boothbay General Store. As part of your package you will receive a coupon good for 10% off the price of a painting or photograph on display throughout our inn.

2000 - Spring

Our New Look is Here!!

The days are getting longer, the sun feels warmer, and the traffic is starting to pick up. This can only mean one thing in the Boothbay Region-The Tourists Are Coming and here at Linekin Bay Bed & Breakfast we can’t wait!

Enclosed is our new brochure. We are very excited about it and we are especially pleased with the color photos taken by Boothbay’s own Robert Mitchell. Bob has done an excellent job in capturing the character and charm of our bed & breakfast.

Thanks to the guests who offered their recommendations that we consider a new brochure as the old one did not do our inn justice. Our goal is to have a brochure that catches your eye and the initial reaction we have received indicates that it is working.

What else has changed??

Always keeping in mind the comfort of our guests, we have been busy during the winter making some changes in décor and amenities.

An upholstered chaise lounge and antique rocking chair have replaced the wicker inRhapsody In Blue, whileThe Linekin Loft now has Queen Anne chairs.

Rhapsody in Blue

The Linekin Loft

Crooked Chimney

The response from our guests was so great for the Vermont style stoves, we decided to put one in Crooked Chimney. It has really been great having them in three of our rooms during the “Quiet Season” as we found guests like to enjoy the ambiance of a fire while looking out onto Linekin Bay on a starry night.

Common Room

Common Room

Two new wing back chairs in the common room make for additional seating so that eight guests can comfortably read, play board games, or just relax and talk to new people.

OUTSIDE CHANGES

We can’t wait for warmer temperatures so that we can start our landscaping projects. One problem we have corrected is that of people driving by and not being aware that we have a beautiful water view. Larry has cleared scrub brush on the suite end of the inn where we will be expanding the parking area and adding a perennial garden. The overgrown area at the back of the house has been cleared and will now be seeded for a larger lawn and another perennial garden. Even the old boathouse now has lights. We did this for guests who bring bicycles or other large articles. We will be able to store them in the boathouse.

TELEPHONES AVAILABLE
IN GUEST ROOMS

One of our goals for the 2000 season was to have telephones available for our guests use. We now have telephones in all our guestrooms, which allow for outgoing calls and Internet access. Local calls are free, and you can use your phone cards for long distance.

Cabbage Island Clambake

We have been in touch with Wayne Moore, owner of Cabbage Island Clambakes, who said that he will be able to accommodate an extra 20 people on each boat trip this year.

For those of you who have not experienced these clambakes, look at our web site for Scenes of East Boothbay-Cabbage Island Clambakes. There are photos and a complete description.

To get to Cabbage Island, which you can see from our B&B, you board a large boat at Boothbay Harbor for a guided tour to the island.

After being greeted by Wayne, you can get ready for A true New England Clam Bake which includes: fish chowder, 2 lobsters, clams, corn, onion, potato, all cooked over an open hard wood fire! Topped off with homemade blueberry cake, plus all the coffee and ice tea you’d like.

After the meal, if you can still walk, feel free to play volleyball, horseshoes, or explore the island. If you stand in just the right spot, you can see the peak of our B&B.

The cost is $39.95 per person. The boat leaves Boothbay Harbor at 12:30 a.m. Mon.-Sat. and returns around 4:00 p.m. On Saturday there is also a 5:00 p.m. bake, while on Sunday there are 2 bakes at 11:30 a.m. & 1:30 p.m.

Cabbage Island Clambakes run from June 25-Sept. 15. Reservations are strongly recommended as last year most of the bakes were sold out by the end of June. Call 207-633-7200.

SPRING ISSUE RECIPE

Classic Sour Cream Waffles

These have become a staple at our B&B. Their tender cake-like interior are so light you could eat stacks of them especially when topped with Maine maple syrup, fresh berries, or whipped cream. It is a favorite of one of our twelve year old guests, Sam.

Ingredients

  • 1-½ C white flour

  • ½ C wheat flour

  • 2 tsp. baking powder

  • 1 tsp. baking soda

  • ½ tsp. salt

  • 1-½ C sour cream

  • 1-1/3 C milk

  • 1 stick butter, melted

Sift the dry ingredients into a bowl and set aside. In a large bowl, beat the egg yolks, sour cream, and milk. Gradually whisk the dry batter into the liquid just until smooth. Gently stir in the melted butter. Let the batter sit for several minutes. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff. Fold the whites into the batter. Ladle the batter into a preheated waffle iron and cook 4-5 minutes.

Our guests came from all over the United States - 39 states and from all over the globe - England, Germany, Switzerland, Bermuda, & Canada. We had joggers, hikers, kayakers, cyclists, plus those who took the whole inn for a family get-together, weddings, and reunions. I even think some guests had a lobster or two.

LAND TRUST UPDATE

One of the jewels of our peninsula is the properties of The Boothbay Region Land Trust. We always enjoy being able to take our two Shelties for a walk at one of the six properties, all of which have great water views.

A recently completed 93-foot wooden span footbridge arches over the salt marsh between the Ovens Mouth Preserve. It was quite a project because after the concrete abutments were complete, the beams were brought by special barge to the area. On the high tide, the barge was floated over the old ice dam and onto location. As the tide went out the beams settled onto concrete abutments for what the contractor described as “a perfect fit.”

The completed span is so picturesque that it has been compared to a Monet painting. A formal dedication with Gov. Angus King is planned later in the year. In the meantime hikers who wish to explore both of the Ovens Mouth properties are enjoying the footbridge.

RECIPE

Warm Spice Fruit Dish

With the coming of winter, when warm foods act in a dual capacity, I serve a warm spice fruit dish. It also works well because with the exception of apples, you use canned fruit, which is not as costly as fresh fruit at this time of year.

Ingredients:

  • 1 -16 oz. can sliced peaches
  • 1 -15 oz can pineapple chunks
  • 1 -16 oz. can sliced pears
  • 1 -17 oz. can apricot halves
  • 2 -Granny Smith apples, cored, peeled, & sliced
  • 1 -stick butter or margarine melted
  • ¾ cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg

Topping:

  • ¼ cup chopped nuts
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • ¼ cup butter or margarine melted

Drain and combine the canned and fresh fruits. Melt the butter and add the brown sugar and spices. Stir into the fruits. Place in a 9 by 13 glass pan. Next, for topping mix all ingredients together with the melted butter or margarine. Sprinkle over the fruit. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Serve warm by itself or top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. This is one of those recipes, which makes the kitchen smell great!

1999 - Fall

A Fabulous Summer

Our first full season went beyond our wildest expectations! Thanks to referrals from other bed and breakfasts in the area, our web page, the local chambers, referrals from guests, and Mother Nature who blessed us with a great summer, our occupancy rate was over 80%. Pretty good for a new business in its first full year.

In fact as the season went on many of the calls we received requesting information on availability unfortunately went like this, "I'm sorry, but we're full on those dates." Some of our guests have already booked their dates for next year so that they can be assured of getting the room they want.

Cubby and Kelly Special

Cubby and Kelly, our two Shelties, are lonely. During the summer they were kept busy greeting guests and welcoming them to The Linekin Bay Bed & Breakfast. Now that we are in the "quiet season," they don't have as many guests to greet.

Cubby & Kelly

To help them keep in shape for next season, we are offering "The Cubby & Kelly Special" where if you book a Saturday night and then add either a Friday or Sunday, the second night is half price. So, when you call, please remember to mention The Cubby and Kelly Special. This special runs from November until March.

"LONESOME" the movie

There was a lot of excitement at our B&B on Friday September 10th when a German-American production company filmed a scene for the movie "Lonesome." The crew set up equipment in The Holbrook Suite to film the scene and they also utilized the side porch, common and dinning rooms. Two of our guests, an English couple from the Bahamas, were filmed as they were enjoying their afternoon tea on the front porch. It was a memorable trip to Maine for this couple as they became engaged and made an appearance in a movie!

"Lonesome" is the story of a young girl from a wealthy family who runs away from home and meets a cowboy who picks her up hitchhiking. The parents can't accept that their daughter would run away, so they report that she has been kidnapped. The mother, played by French actress Marisa Berenson, who has appeared in "Cabaret" and Clint Eastwood's "White Thunder," tries to track down her daughter.

As this film crew is on a low budget, they didn't have any funds for compensation. This was fine with us as it was exciting to have the scene filmed here, plus it felt good to be able to help them out. We will receive recognition during the movie credits, along with a video of the movie and tickets to the Maine premier.

The complete story, which appeared in The Boothbay Register along with photographs, is included on our web site.

Honeymoon and Anniversary Celebrations

Love was definitely in the air at our inn this past season. Seven couples spent their honeymoons here and at last count sixteen couples have celebrated anniversaries.
The millennium appears bright as two honeymoon couples are returning to our inn to celebrate their first anniversaries and one couple has reserved three nights for their 46th anniversary.

Special Arrangements

Please keep in mind that we would be happy to make any arrangements you request to make your stay at our inn special. Over the past season we have provided special baskets filled with champagne or wine, fruit, chocolate, cheese/crackers and freshly baked goods, which guests have requested. For the anniversary couple, we can order flowers to have in your room on your arrival. Just give us a couple of days notice and your request will be waiting when you arrive.

Recipes

During the season we have had requests for recipes of our breakfast offerings. Larry is always happy to share any of these. So, a regular section of our newsletter will be to print one of these. "Peach Linekin" is the feature for this edition of Ebb Tidings.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups skim milk
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla
  • 4 eggs-slightly beaten
  • 5 cups quick-cooking rolled oats
  • 1 1/2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. Salt (if desired)
  • 1/4 CUP margarine or butter melted
  • 2 cups chopped, frozen unsweetened sliced peaches (canned peaches can be substituted as long as they are packed in unsweetened juice)

1) Spray 13 X 9 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. In large bowl, combine milk, vanilla, eggs and blend well. Add oats, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt, and mix well. Stir in margarine and peaches until well combined. Pour mixture into sprayed dish; cover and refrigerate at least 3 hours or overnight.

2) Heat oven to 350, uncover dish and bake 40-45 minutes or until slightly puffed and golden brown. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. Cut into squares; place in individual bowls. Optional - place fresh peaches around and yogurt or cream on top.

1999 - Summer

WELCOME

This is the first edition of what we hope will be a regular way to keep in touch with friends and guests about what is going on at the Linekin Bay Bed & Breakfast.

Marti & Larry

As many of you already know we opened our inn to our first guests on Labor Day weekend. We had a very successful fall season as each weekend we were booked along with many weekday nights. We have remained open throughout the winter and have been encouraged with the number of guests that we have had during the "quiet season."

NEW CONSTRUCTION

During this time construction has continued on our fourth room, "The Holbrook Suite" ,which was just recently completed.

The Holbrook Suite

This room features a king size cherry Rice carved post pediment bed, a Hearthstone gas fireplace, sofa bed, wing back chair, and a ceiling fan which graces the high ceilings. A television with cable is set in an armoire. The bath has an antique claw foot bathtub, corner shower, tile floor, and pedestal sink. The room has its own outside private entrance from a long porch where you can enjoy one of our beautiful sunsets while rocking in a wicker chair.

Its name comes from brothers Ezekiel and Eliphalet Holbrook who built this magnificent ten room house in 1878. They used proceeds from their very successful store E. & E. Holbrook Store to build the house. One reason for their success is that their store supplied all goods and many services for the workers at the pogie factories located on Linekin Bay. For the whole story check out the history section of our web page.

WEB SITE

We are very excited about our new web site (www.linekinbaybb.com) which went on line April 28th. Our good friend and retired Lewiston Police detective David Gudas has put his heart and soul into this project and the results show it. In his very creative manner, which has garnered Dave an award for the web page he created for the Lewiston Police Dept., you can not only see many photographs of our B&B, but also hear such sounds as Marti and Larry greeting you and our 120 year old door bell.

The reaction we have had so far is very positive as now people can see all of our guest rooms, common areas, and the grounds and really see just how beautiful everything is. How does the old saying go " A picture is worth ..."

SCHOOL STREET GALLERY

We are fortunate again this year to have local artist Richard Secor displaying his works at our inn. This is a win/win arrangement for both of us as we are fortunate to have lovely paintings throughout the house and it gives Dick another opportunity for people to see his work and hopefully stop in at School Street Gallery owned by he and his wife Melissa.

School Street Gallery

Their gallery is also located in East Boothbay just a mile and a half from our inn.

BOOTHBAY REGION LAND TRUST

One of the reasons that we decided to open our bed and breakfast in the Boothbay Region is because of the land trust properties which are available for hiking, sight seeing, and bird watching. The Boothbay Region Land Trust protects 758 acres on the peninsula. One of these properties is located a stone's throw from our front door.

Linekin Preserve Trailhead
Linekin Preserve Trailhead

Linekin Preserve just down the street includes 651 feet of frontage on the Damariscotta River and 2.35 miles of hiking trails. It is just one of six land trust properties which offer hiking trails. So remember if you come to the Boothbay Region, don't forget your hiking boots.

BOOTHBAY REGION ACTIVITIES

Another reason we wanted to have our inn in the Boothbay Region is because of everything the area has to offer. The "Harbor" as locals refer to Boothbay Harbor offers a multitude of shops, restaurants, puffin and whale watches, lighthouses and sunset cruises, and schooner sailings.

Throughout the year we have events such as Fisherman's Festival, Windjammer Days, Harbor Jazz Weekend, Fall Foliage Festival, and the Harbor Lights Festival.

Add to this fireworks displays during Windjammer Days and July third, plus all the events throughout the year at the Boothbay Railway Village and you can see how Boothbay is a great place to spend your vacation on the lovely Maine coast.

OTHER NEW CONSTRUCTION:

Our resident contractor Jim Roberge of Sawdust Builders showed his great building skills again. He and Larry built a 16’ by 25’ deck off the back of the house. Now guests can enjoy their morning coffee or afternoon dessert while they sit on a lounge chair and enjoy the beautiful views of Linekin Bay.

The new deck

During the summer guests will also have the option of having breakfast served to them at the umbrella table on this deck. The new deck can also be seen in our Common Areas web site section.

EARLY RESERVATIONS:

This is our first full season so most of the summer we still have rooms available. Still, a word to the wise, each week we take a couple of reservations for summer bookings and our guest book is starting to fill in. If you have a specific date that you would like to stay with us, please call so that you can be assured of getting the day and room you would like.
